What to do
- 1In stroke play, play whenever it’s safe and ready — no penalty either way.
- 2In match play, honor plays first, then whoever is farthest from the hole.
- 3If you play out of turn in match play, your opponent can cancel the stroke and make you replay it.
Based on the modern Rules of Golf (Rule 6.4), as published by the USGA and The R&A and effective from the 2019 revision. Local rules can modify some situations — check the scorecard or with the committee when in doubt.
