Is it a penalty to tee up outside the markers?

PenaltyTwo strokes· under Rule 6.1b

What to do

  1. 1Check that you’re teeing between and no farther forward than the tee markers, up to two club-lengths back.
  2. 2If you play from outside that area in stroke play, add two penalty strokes.
  3. 3Play a corrected tee shot from within the teeing area before starting the next hole.
  4. 4In match play, correct instead by replaying only if your opponent asks you to.

Based on the modern Rules of Golf (Rule 6.1b), as published by the USGA and The R&A and effective from the 2019 revision. Local rules can modify some situations — check the scorecard or with the committee when in doubt.
