What to do
- 1Check that you’re teeing between and no farther forward than the tee markers, up to two club-lengths back.
- 2If you play from outside that area in stroke play, add two penalty strokes.
- 3Play a corrected tee shot from within the teeing area before starting the next hole.
- 4In match play, correct instead by replaying only if your opponent asks you to.
Based on the modern Rules of Golf (Rule 6.1b), as published by the USGA and The R&A and effective from the 2019 revision. Local rules can modify some situations — check the scorecard or with the committee when in doubt.
