Penalty: One stroke

How do you take relief from a red (lateral) penalty area?

PenaltyOne stroke· under Rule 17.1d

What to do

  1. 1Find where the ball last crossed the edge of the red penalty area.
  2. 2Measure two club-lengths from that point, no closer to the hole.
  3. 3Drop in that relief area (not in another penalty area).
  4. 4Alternative: use back-on-the-line relief or replay from your previous spot instead.

Based on the modern Rules of Golf (Rule 17.1d), as published by the USGA and The R&A and effective from the 2019 revision. Local rules can modify some situations — check the scorecard or with the committee when in doubt.
