Strokes Gained: Approach
How it works
Every approach shot is compared to the expected strokes to finish from the resulting position versus the expected strokes from where the shot started. Longer, harder approaches carry a bigger potential gain or loss, so the stat naturally weights difficulty before summing across the round.
What's a good Strokes Gained: Approach?
This category shows the widest gap between skill levels: tour pros gain around +0.5 to +0.8 strokes per round on approach, while it’s often the single biggest strokes-lost category for mid-handicap amateurs. Improving proximity from 150-200 yards moves this number more than almost any other change.
