Approach Shot Performance
How it works
Approach shots are grouped into yardage bands — often 50-100, 100-150, 150-175, 175-200, and 200-plus — and each band gets its own GIR rate, average proximity, and strokes gained figure. Comparing bands reveals patterns, like strong short irons but weak long irons, that a single overall stat would hide.
What's a good Approach Shot Performance?
Tour players are strongest inside 150 yards, often gaining the most strokes from wedge distances, and proximity naturally worsens as yardage climbs for every skill level. Amateurs typically see the sharpest drop-off from 175 yards and beyond, often the highest-leverage range to practice.
